Supporting Traditional Agriculture
The Traditional Balinese irrigation system (Subak) and its infrastructure, is recognised by the UN as a unique system of cooperation between farmer communities to maximise the availability of precious water to grow rice and other crops. Over a thousand years old, it is currently under pressure from developers who covet water for development of hotels, villas and tourism. But if the beautiful vistas of rice fields in Bali disappear, who would come? And how would ordinary people live?
To redress the imbalance, Swarna Dwipa buys materials (rather than giving money) to support local Subak farmers when there is a need to improve or maintain the current system of irrigation channels.
